RIP Roy Cross: Airfix artist extraordinaire
“A relatively unknown artist who without doubt inspired generations of model makers and wargamers. He has passed away this week aged 100!”
From the OP, on Instagram:
“RIP Roy Cross - a relatively unknown artist who without doubt inspired generations of model makers and wargamers. He has passed away this week aged 100! Roy was employed by Airfix as the artist for their models in the 1960s-70s and these iconic images of that era are burnt into the memories and hearts of many of us... RIP Roy, thanks for firing up my imagination and love of military history.”
And that of many of us. I was a plastic modeler in my youth, and built many an Airfix model, inspired in no small measure by the excellence of the box art. And those who have followed The Anglophilic Anglican for a long time may remember my August 2018 post on “Blighty Boys,” the qualifications for which included “impressive collection of Airfix models”!
Farewell, Mr. Cross! May you rest in peace, and rise in glory!
I have built many. All beauty is from God.
